Period poverty has negative impacts on health, education, gender equality, and productivity as girls are forced to drop out of school. A group of more than 280 female pupils were brought together to an engagement on
menstrual hygiene, the joy of womanhood and sexual reproductive health.
ZAW Executive Director Edah Chimya explained the objectives of the project highlighting that
it was very important for girls to be kept in School every day of the month regardless of
whether or not they were having monthly periods.
The training and support at Dzikomo School was very impactful, brought fulfillment as

"In cascading the WP program we interacted from girls and boys from Epworth High School, Muguta Secondary School, Domboramwari High School and St Giles Special School.

...Equity in menstruation is of paramount importance as the girls living with disabilities face greater obstacles due to stigma and practical challenges. In all schools which we have visited the facilities are not user friendly for school children living with disabilities with the exception of St Giles Special School which caters mainly for children living with disabilities..."  Read full report

"On 28 May, the date on which World Menstrual Hygiene Day is celebrated, a very motivating activity was very motivating to took place at the Mapendo school....

The principal and the teachers got highly motivated by the WP activity and promised to schedule it as regular events in future.

They recommend that the initiators of the WP project should never give up these activities which are of great value for the girls...."

"It is an undoubtable fact that many women and girls countrywide lack access to menstrual hygiene management (MHM) materials and water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) facilities to manage their menstrual health in Zambia. This is evidenced by the many women and girls who use unhygienic menstrual management materials, which can cause deadly health complications. Public spaces such as schools which lack adequate ablution and gender -sensitive WASH facilities add to these health complications. According to a research study posted on the BMC Public Health website, about 44 percent of girls drop out of school before completing their secondary education in Zambia....Read full report

"...We started with an educational talk among the participants and the RENATA Aunties. Let us emphasize here that most parents are little or not interested in their daughters' menstruation in the sense that they do not provide their children with sanitary pads during the menstruation nor do they know how to provide this to them, which might help the girls to manage their protection during the period-bleeding. Menstruation and this particular issue had prompted the Aunties to focus on menstrual hygiene. They are hoping to contribute towards a behavioural change....read full report.
